WASHINGTON – As the City of Newburgh continues to await word on if it will receive a third round of federal SAFER grant money to hire additional firefighters, its twin city across the Hudson River has received similar funding.
The Beacon City Fire Department, comprised of paid and volunteer members, will receive $110,040 in federal program funds to hire a recruitment coordinator.
That individual will work part-time to recruit and retain at least nine qualified volunteers in two years and focus on developing a recruitment pipeline with local schools and colleges.
The City of Newburgh Fire Department, meanwhile, is hoping to receive funding to hire additional paid firefighters. As of Friday, Homeland Security has yet to announce if the city will receive a third round of funding.
Last month, Newburgh laid off several firefighters because its round two SAFER grant expired.
