Hovey, left, and Doss

NEW WINDSOR – Town of New Windsor Police Chief Richard Hovey made his official last exit of the station Thursday afternoon, during a ceremony symbolizing the beginning of his retirement.
Hovey, who had worked in the department for 40 years, beginning as a dispatcher and working his way through the ranks, was surrounded by family, friends and fellow officers on a walk to his cruiser for the final ride.
Hovey said, looking back on his career, he is proud of the work he’s been able to do and was grateful to have been able to do it for so long.
“Just knowing that I could be helpful to people over the years in different circumstances – that was always the reward of being a police officer. I have a lot of good memories in that sense,” said Hovey. “Just being involved with community, I felt that was very rewarding. I’ll always remember those moments.”
Hovey is being succeeded by 21-year veteran officer Lt. Robert Doss.
Doss said that he is honored to be able to carry on the title and is looking forward to maintaining the reputation of excellence the department has.
“It’s a huge undertaking, a huge responsibility, to be able to be the next Chief of Police and make sure that tradition continues and we continue to work hard and make sure crime stays under control and we take care of everybody that not only lives in town, but actually travels through town and works here,” said Doss, who officially becomes chief today.
