NEWBURGH – The second federal SAFER grant that funded a dozen Newburgh firefighters expired one month ago and the city has applied to Washington for a third round.
While officials say it is highly unlikely for a third round to be granted to a city, Newburgh Fire Chief Terry Ahlers said they are still in the running.
“They would let us know right away if we are not and we are still in it so there is definitely still hope,” Ahlers said. “Obviously there  are still awards so they still have money in the pot. They haven’t reached the end yet.”
When the last grant expired, the city retained three firefighters on the payroll.
