Drug investigation leads to arrest of robbery suspect

NEWBURGH – An investigation on Thursday into a report of open air
narcotics dealing and usage in the area of 41 City Terrace in Newburgh
in front of a state-certified daycare center on Thursday led to the arrests
of two men.

Responding investigators saw the men, one of whom was Sean Mitchell, 19,
who was wanted on a Newburgh City Court bench warrant for armed robbery
with a gun as well as another robbery warrant from Orange County Court.

He fled, but was caught a short distance away and was subdued after a
struggle with police.

During transport to the police station, Mitchell damaged the rear door
of a police vehicle.

Once at headquarters, he was found in possession of 3.8 grams of crack
cocaine and it was also learned that he had two other bench warrants –
one for bail jumping from Orange County Court, and the other, one for
false personation from Town of New Windsor Court.

Mitchell continued to be aggressive toward officers and at one point began
to urinate on the floor of the booking area, then into a cup and threatened
to throw the cup of urine at officers.

Officers on the street continued to look for the second man, known to
be Clive Powell, 26, who is on parole for drug possession. He was picked
up after being observe selling drugs in the area of 41 City Terrace.

He was charged with loitering and when searched at police headquarters,
officers found him in possession of close to a half-ounce of crack cocaine
as well as 40 glassine envelopes of heroin.

Mitchell was charged with assault on a police officer, criminal mischief,
obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest criminal possession
of a controlled substance and the four bench warrants.

Powell was charged with three counts of drug possession and loitering.

Some of the officers involved received minor injuries and were treated
and released at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.
