POUGHKEEPSIE – Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Larry Sharpe
brought his message to the Walkway Over the Hudson and Rhinebeck on Saturday,
meeting with local residents and laying out his agenda for the state.
Sharpe, who said he has a good chance at winning in November in a five-way
race, spoke of his opposition to the SAFE Act, the state budget, which
he called “a disaster,” and a local subject, the Mario Cuomo
Bridge at Tappan Zee.
He said the state should lease the naming rights to the new twin-span.
“Instead of naming the bridge the Mario Cuomo Bridge, why aren’t
we naming it instead the Staples Bridge or the Key Bank Bridge or the
UBS Bridge? These are companies that pay billions of dollars every year
in advertising and marketing and they don’t know where to put their
money,” he said. “They drop $20 million a year on a stadium
that gets used on the weekends. How about a bridge that gets used every
day by a million riders and gets mentioned hundreds of times every single
day during rush hour? You would drop $100 million on that? Sure they would,
and they take care of maintenance.”
Sharpe also addressed the education system and fathers’ rights
while in Dutchess County.
