KINGSTON – A much-debated plan to amend the Ulster County Charter to limit terms of top elected officials was delayed once again as county legislators postponed a scheduled vote on a local law at their monthly meeting Tuesday night.
The county executive, comptroller and county legislators would be limited to 12 years in office.
Democrat Minority Leader Hector Rodriguez blamed the need to postpone on much misinformation.
“In order to remove any doubt, I think, of any outside political intrigue, the Democratic caucus at this time would like to go and postpone this,” Rodriguez said.  “Again, with that timeframe that means any local law that did pass this body would then have to be for the 2019 election cycle and at least that way, we could have an honest to goodness vote.”
Last week, the legislature’s Laws and Rules Committee defeated a proposal to let voters decide on whether legislator terms should be changed from two to four years.
If the legislature adopts the local law, it would go to voters as a referendum this November.
