WASHINGTON – The federal farm bill is due to come up for a vote by the Senate this week and while Senator Kirsten Gillibrand supports increased benefits for New York farmers, she also wants to ensure that rural communities have job opportunities for their residents.
To that end, she is introducing an amendment to the farm bill to create a new grant program to invest in local efforts to launch new companies and create new jobs.
“It would promote investment in our rural communities,” the senator said. “It would make it much easier for entrepreneurs in our rural areas to get the capital that they need to start up and grow and it would finally stop the trend of jobs leaving rural New York.”
Gillibrand’s bipartisan amendment would invest up to $2 million per award to community-driven initiatives to help improve the local economies of rural areas.
