WHITE PLAINS – A former Eastchester physician has been indicted and arraigned on an 11-count indictment alleging he stole more than $500,000 from a 98-year-old Yonkers woman. Peter Corines, 69, entered a not guilty plea in Westchester County Court.
Corines was arraigned on one count of grand larceny, six counts of attempted grand larceny, three counts of identity theft and scheme to defraud. All charges are felonies.
The indictment alleges that during a two-week period in November 2007, Corines stole from Bernice Judd Porter by fraudulently claiming to be her power of attorney and pretending to be her on the phone or online with numerous financial institutions where the victim had accounts.
Corines allegedly obtained the victim’s Social Security Number and information about banks where she had accounts; posed as Porter on the phone to redeem funds; created only accounts in her name without her knowledge; changed her address with banks; wrote checks from her checkbook and deposited them into his own brokerage account, and his yacht and auto restoration and repair company’s bank account; and created a joint bank account with Porter’s and his names, deposited checks into that account and withdraw cash from other bank accounts owned by the victim.
In total, Corines allegedly stole $540,106. He is also charged with attempted to steal an additional $262,171 during the same two-week period.
Corines remains out on bail.
