ALBANY – A proposal by Wallkill Town officials to place red light cameras at strategic intersections along the Route 211 corridor failed again in Albany before lawmakers adjourned.
The state legislature must approve the request, but while the Senate adopted it, sponsored by Senator John Bonacic (R, Mt. Hope), it remained bottled up in committee despite the efforts of its sponsor, Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh).
“We know how important it is to Wallkill and basically getting it through the Transportation Committee was very, very difficult; I had a lot of resistance,” Gunther said. “I don’t know why there is such resistance. It was a request by an area in New York State and I think a home rule request should be requested.”
The town wants the cameras, which have been rejected in Albany for several
years, to stop the high number of motorists running red lights and to
capture accident scenes.
