YONKERS – A Bronx man drowned and his female companion suffered non-life threatening injuries when they were discovered Monday evening off the JFK Marina on Warburton Avenue.
The couple had apparently started out on a personal watercraft, which was found unattended by investigators. The female passenger, 23, was located on an unoccupied vessel moored at a local boat club; she was rescued and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The male operator, Darel Reyes-Sanchez, 31, was located by the Yonkers Police Marine Unit floating unconscious in the water. He was taken aboard, administered CPR and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead of apparent drowning.
Preliminary investigation revealed their craft made it out to the Hudson, but it was undetermined how the victims wound up in the water. The woman was able to float and make her way towards the shoreline where she lost sight of her companion. It is believed neither was a swimmer.
Both were wearing personal floatation devices; however, they appear to be children’s vests.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
