TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Rosendale Town Councilwoman Jennifer Metzger, a local proponent of sustainable energy, is opposed to a proposal for a $400 million upgrade to the Danskammer electric generating plant in the Town of Newburgh.
Metzger said in two years, utility-scale battery storage rules in New York can compete with fossil generation to serve peak demand.
“It doesn’t make sense to make this long-term investment in this brand new plant when storage is right around the corner,” she said. “It is kind of analogous to investing in eight-track tape technology in 1986.”
Metzger said any additional energy generated by the upgraded Danskammer plant would be used to power the New York City area, not the Mid-Hudson.
