PORT JERVIS – A sinkhole along the Metro-North Railroad tracks between Otisville and Port Jervis shut down service between those two stations Wednesday night into Thursday.
Repairs were made and service resumed.
Precision Pipeline, the contractor hired by Millennium Pipeline to install a 36-inch gas pipeline, damaged an eight-inch water drain pipe creating the sinkhole along the track.
MTA officials said while making the repairs on Wednesday, the water flow began to undermine the track and trains were unable to run over it.
Metro-North crews attempted to secure buses for customers between Otisville and Port Jervis but were unsuccessful with their contractor bus operators and it took several hours for an MTA bus to get there.
As a result, trains were terminated Wednesday night in Otisville and customers to Port Jervis had to make their own way home.
Service between Port Jervis and Otisville remained interrupted Thursday morning as repairs were not completed. Substitute bus service operated between Middletown and Port Jervis. Train service operated to and from Otisville. Customers connected with inbound trains at Middletown or Otisville. Buses followed train schedules.
