MIDDLETOWN – The City of
Middletown will ask the state for exemption from the century-old rules
for licensing plumbers in cities.
Other cities around the state have sought and received the exemption
and Mayor Joseph DeStefano told the common council last night that Middletown
should have the same permission.
“Cities like Beacon, Poughkeepsie, Schenectady, Olean, Hornell, Binghamton, New York City, and Glens Falls, I believe, all have requested over the years to be exempt from this law because of the heavy burden it put on to have an inspector that met the state qualifications,” DeStefano said.
The state legislature must give the okay for the change before it adjourns in late June. The governor must then sign the measure.
