Municipal ID cards suggested for City of Newburgh

NEWBURGH – The Poughkeepsie-based
group Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson is urging the city of Newburgh to follow
the lead of the cities of Middletown and Poughkeepsie, both of which are
moving toward approving municipal identification cards for their residents.
Organization Executive Director Jonathan Bix told the Newburgh City Council
Monday night that those IDs have benefits for everyone who lives in Newburgh.
“Municipal IDs are for all residents and will benefit all residents, including many who lack other forms of photo ID, such a seniors, youth, immigrants, homeless residents, transgender residents, residents returning from incarceration, survivors of domestic violence and others,” Bix said. “Municipal IDs will not be a security risk for residents that participate in the program or the city, as long as the city follows the lead of the majority of other municipal ID programs in the country and its structuring.”
Newburgh council members appear to be unified in their support of the ID program.
