BEACON – The Beacon City Fire Department is in the same boat as every other fire department with volunteers in the Hudson Valley; they have difficulty in recruiting them.
The Beacon department, which is a hybrid of volunteers and paid professionals, still must call for additional help, said Chief Gary VanVoorhis.
“The City of Beacon, like every other fire department in Dutchess County, when we get committed at an alarm, we are going to be calling mutual aid for different operations of the fire from a rescue team to a truck company; different things that help us out at every incident,” VanVoorhis said.
Beacon currently has 26 volunteers, but only eight are certified for interior operations.
Departments tend to have difficulty recruiting volunteers because of busy family obligations and lifestyles.
