MONTICELLO – A man, who reported that his vehicle had been stolen while he was shopping at the Walmart store in Monticello late at night on Tuesday, April 23, has been charged with falsely reporting an incident and other charges.
The case began when Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies received a report of a car in the woods on the outbound access road of Resorts World in the Town of Thompson.
Deputies found a vacant 2006 Honda Ridgeline pickup truck that had run off the road.
While that was being investigated, a call came in for a vehicle stolen from the Walmart parking lot in Monticello. Deputies interviewed Robin Redner, 40, of Loch Sheldrake, who said he had gone shopping at the store and when he came out, his vehicle was missing. Investigation revealed Redner had been at Resorts World earlier in the evening and video surveillance later showed him being dropped off at Walmart by Barbara Cavanagh, 41, of Loch Sheldrake; he had never entered the store before calling police.
Redner was charged with falsely reporting an incident, obstructing governmental administration, and driving while intoxicated. He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and refusing to take a breath test. He was released on his own recognizance pending a future court appearance.
Cavanagh was charged with the misdemeanor of obstructing governmental administration and was issued an appearance ticket to return to town court.
