TOWN OF NEWBURGH – “Mission 19” of Hudson Valley Honor Flight will take 84 veterans to Washington, DC next Saturday, April 14.
The flight will depart Stewart International Airport near Newburgh taking
the vets on an all-expense paid trip to the nation’s capital and
its war memorials on a daylong visit.
There will be 21 World War II veterans, 61 Korean War veterans and two Vietnam War vets on the flight. Among them are two sets of brothers, two merchant marines, female Marine Sgt. Betty Jurgens of Cornwall and 100-year-old Ed Otterstedt of Chester. The mission also contains the largest group yet from Dutchess County – 27 vets.
Each vet will be accompanied by a volunteer personal “guardian” who is responsible for ensuring that the trip is a memorable one.
Honor Flights have been held for the past six years with funding largely coming from the major sponsor, ShopRite Supermarkets.
