Coyote spotted in Westchester

WHITE PLAINS – A coyote that attacked a Westchester County police
officer, biting him, before it was shot and killed, has tested positive
for rabies, the county Health Department reported on Saturday.

The animal attacked the officer and a few other people and killed a dog
in Yonkers this past week.

The second coyote has not been located and is presumed rabid.

If you see the animal, call 911. Residents who encounter any coyote that
does not flee from people or displays aggressive behavior should assume
it is dangerous and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety,
health officials said.

Everyone who reported their exposure to a coyote over the past several
days has begun receiving preventive rabies treatment. If left untreated,
rabies is fatal.
