WHITE PLAINS – A Mount Vernon man was sentenced by Westchester County Court Judge Susan Cacace to 40 years to life in state prison on charges of attempted murder, attempted assault, attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property.
Ronald Greenland, 56, was attempting to steal rims from a truck at a car dealership in Mount Kisco early in the morning of November 8, 2016.
Westchester Police Officer David Sanchez was on patrol when he spotted a suspicious vehicle in the dealership parking lot. That vehicle was reported stolen previously.
The officer attempted to pull it over at a traffic light, but Greenland sped off. A high-speed chase ensued. Greenland then stopped, got out of the vehicle and began running. The officer chased him through backyards eventually catching him.
Greenland hid in a wooded area as Sanchez, with gun drawn, demanded he show his hands and come out. Greenland refused to show his hands which were hidden and he remained crouched in the dark. Sanchez holstered his gun and approached Greenland, who stood up and stabbed Sanchez several times in the chest.
Greenland was eventually subdued when backup officers arrived.
The knife used in the attack was recovered and Sanchez was not injured as he was wearing a bullet-proof vest resulting in no knife penetration into his body.
