KINGSTON –  Ulster County will accept requests from landowners wanted to have their agricultural lands included in a New York State-certified agricultural district from March 1 through March 30.
Landowners seeking that status must submit a complete application with tax map identification numbers and a copy of the relevant portion of the tax map to Burt Samuelson at the Ulster County Planning Department, 244 Fair Street, PO Box 1800, Kingston, NY 12402-1800 no later than March 30.
Ag district law adopted by the state legislature in 1971 provides for the creation of agricultural districts to protect and promote the availability of land for farming purposes.
Lands in those districts are protected from unreasonable local regulation of farm practices, the acquisition by public entities through eminent domain, and the advance of public funds to construct facilities that encourage non-farm development.
The county has four certified agricultural districts now containing some 71,000 acres of farmland.
