KINGSTON – The Resource Center for Accessible Living in Kingston is lobbying for Congress to extend funding for the Money Follows the Person Program that is designed to help states transition people with disabilities from institutions into the community.
Agency Systems Advocate Alex Thompson said the funding expired in September
2016 and states are running out of money to continue the program.
“The funds that are used to provide their care in institutions can then be used to facilitate them living in the community,” Thompson said. “There is also a cost savings there too, because it is usually less expensive for people to be living in the community.”
In New York, the federal funds pay for the Open Doors Transition Center
and Peer Outreach and Referral programs.
The Resource Center for Accessible Living serves clients in Ulster, Dutchess and Greene counties.
