WHITE PLAINS – Federal authorities say 10 members of the “Southside” street gang in Newburgh are charged with additional crimes of racketeering.  The indictments were announced on Thursday.
Three of the defendants are charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin and crack cocaine and two are charged with the August 2015 murder of Sammy Stubbs, who was shot in Newburgh. Two others are charged with the February 2017 murder of Gervontay Owens-Grant, who was also shot in Newburgh.
Nine of the defendants are already in custody in connection with charges contained in a previous indictment related to the case, which led to the arrests of 21 individuals in June 2017.
From at least 2014 through June 2017, the Southside gang allegedly trafficked in narcotics, robbery and murder and sold heroin, crack cocaine, and marijuana in the gang’s territory, promoting their gang affiliation on social media sites including Facebook, possessed firearms, and engaged in shootings as part of their gang membership.
It is alleged that on August 13, 2015, Skyler Davis and Davonte Hawkins murdered Stubbs during a botched robbery of a card game in Newburgh and on February 12, 2017, Troy Young and William Fennell murdered a rival from the other side of Newburgh, Owens-Grant, after an altercation broke out at a Valentine’s Day-themed party in Newburgh.
Members of the gang were also charged with conspiring to distribute more than one kilogram of heroin and more than 280 grams of crack cocaine.
