CHARLESTOWN, IRELAND – Last year top officials of Stewart International Airport at Newburgh and Ireland West Airport Knock at Charlestown, Co. Mayo, Ireland signed a sister airport agreement while meeting at Stewart.
There is presently no passenger service connecting the two facilities, but officials had hoped the agreement might spur future activity.
That may be in the offing as Ireland West Airport Managing Director Joe Gilmore told Mid-Hudson News by email last week that “we have been presenting to prospective airline carriers that will hopefully provide a direct service in the near term.”
Gilmore said that the work is ongoing and focused with hopes of achieving positive results. “We are particularly encouraged by the continued success and growth being demonstrated by SWF in both growing passenger traffic and new international services in the past 12 months,” he wrote. “In addition to this passenger and tourism traffic between the US and Ireland also continues to increase.”
Last summer, European carrier Norwegian Airways began five successful routes between Stewart and Europe with all showing passenger growth. That airline is considering adding routes in the future.
