GOSHEN – Three women and a man died of drug overdoses in Orange
County this past weekend, District Attorney David Hoovler said Monday.
The cases appear to be unrelated, said the DA.
“When we’re losing four people a weekend, such as this past weekend, it’s time we all stand up and take notice as to just how bad this has gotten,” Hoovler said.
A 37-year-old woman died in Monroe, a 24-year-old woman died in Maybrook, a 28-year-old Warwick woman died at Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill and a 30-year-old man died in Goshen.
The Maybrook victim was a mother. In conjunction with Town of Montgomery Police, Jay Pagan, 32, of Maybrook, was charged with supplying the woman with drugs prior to her death. He was charged with criminal possession and sale of drugs and is in the Orange County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $75,000 secured bond.
Hoovler said 88 people died in 2017 from suspected overdoses in Orange County.
“The death toll is continuing to rise despite everything we do,” he said.   Hoovler pushed his three-prong approach to the drug problem – enforcement, better education that runs from elementary to high school, and treatment on demand.
