NEWBURGH – Major crimes in the City of Newburgh were down almost 15 percent in 2017 over 2016, City Manager Michael Ciaravino told the city council Monday night.
He credited the work of the police department as well as continued cooperation by the community for the drop in crime.
Ciaravino said violent crime declined by 14 percent and property crime dropped by 16 percent. “This was the lowest crime rates in over 10 years in the City of Newburgh,” he said. “The bullet to body shooting decreased by over 65 percent for a yearend total of 17 shootings in 2017 compared to 48 in 2016.”
Last year 43 handguns and 37 long guns were taken off the streets.
