CARMEL – Sunday was the last day on the job for Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith. He lost his reelection bid to incoming Sheriff Robert Langley.
Smith took the occasion to thank “all of our fellow team members in the law enforcement and emergency services community for all of their support of our sheriff’s deputies.”
Smith said it was a “great honor and privilege” to have served the county for 19 years as deputy county executive and sheriff. He quoted baseball great Lou Gehrig when he said, “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth.”
Prior to entering county government Smith served in the military.
