ALBANY – Legislation that
would allow persons applying or re-applying for hunting, fishing and trapping
licenses to enroll in New York’s organ donor registry has been introduced
in Albany.  This legislation is seen as one step toward expanding
the New York State Donate Life Registry.
While the national average for persons over 18 to register as organ donors is 52 percent, New York’s is only 30 percent and Senator William Larkin (R, Cornwall-on-Hudson) and Assemblyman James Skoufis (D, Woodbury) introduced legislation to encourage more people to enroll.
In October, the governor signed an executive order directing the state health department to work with local agencies to provide New Yorkers with more opportunities to become organ donors.
