WHITE LAKE – Two Poughkeepsie residents were arrested by Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies Saturday morning on charges of endangering the welfare of a child.
The driver of a vehicle, Cristina Szewczyk, 39, and her passenger, Steve Wood, 30, both of Poughkeepsie, had been seen in the Dunkin Donuts on Route 17B in White Lake around 10 a.m. both nodding off while with a young child.
Deputies were called to the scene as they were getting into a pickup truck ready to leave.
Undersheriff Eric Chaboty said it turns out the two had snorted heroin prior to their arrival at the donut shop. Szewczyk’s six-year-old niece was with them in the truck.
Szewczyk was charged with felony aggravated DWI under Leandra’s Law. Both were charged with endangering the welfare of a child.  Wood was wanted for petit larceny on a warrant issued by the Horry County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina.
Both were arraigned and released on their own recognizance pending a future court appearance.
The child was unharmed and returned to her parents.
