NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh’s water contamination problem should be a wakeup call to all municipalities, City Manager Michael Ciaravino warns.
Pointing to the Matrix pharmaceutical distribution facility constructed in the adjacent Town of Newburgh as having the potential of negatively impacting the city’s watershed, the manager suggested the formation of an inter-municipal water authority to the benefit of all communities involved.
Ciaravino said short-term economic gain appears to be placed ahead of any type of long-term thinking and stewardship of the valuable natural resources.
“We have to wean ourselves from the addiction of the quarter-to-quarter mentality of Wall Street and understand that the decisions we are making here and now in the short-term on a reactive basis for short-term economic gain can actually spell the death knell for us long-term if there isn’t drinkable water in our community,” he said.
Ciaravino warmed that every development project in this region will dry up if there isn’t water for the community to drink.
