GOSHEN – Thanksgiving eve is unofficially considered the busiest bar night of the year and police in the region don’t want you to become a statistic. Agencies across the Mid-Hudson/Catskills region are cracking down with a STOP-DWI initiative from today, November 22, through Sunday, November 26.

Today (one of the busiest travel days of the year) is “Black Wednesday” said Cherry (podium)

Orange County STOP-DWI Coordinator Craig Cherry provided a startling statistic on Tuesday surrounded by law enforcement officials during an announcement of the crackdown.
On average, the Thanksgiving is the holiday period with the most motor vehicle deaths followed by Labor Day and Christmas, and yes, even higher than New Year’s Eve,” Cherry said. ”That’s why Wednesday before Thanksgiving is given the title ‘Black Wednesday’.”
“Deaths are tragic as they are preventable,” said Chief Assistant District Attorney Chris Borek.
Fred Dana of Dana Distributors, the Goshen-based wholesaler of Budweiser beer products, said his company is once again operating the Alert Cab program to transport people home from bars in Orange, Sullivan and Rockland counties if they have had too much to drink this weekend. Alert Cab will operate through New Year’s Day
