BUCHANAN – Five years after Hurricane Sandy caused considerable damage to electric power infrastructure in the region, an industry official said it has been improved.
Dr. Matthew Cordaro, a former industry CEO, said lessons have been learned
and improvements have been made.
“However, all of these storms are very different. Some of these storms are such that you may be able to reduce the amount of damage, but you are never going to totally eliminate the prospect of thousands or many hundreds of thousands of people losing their power in the event of such storms,” Cordaro said.
In the future, there may be the opportunity to reduce the number of outages, he said.
Cordaro is a member of New York AREA’s advisory board. That organization, Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance, supports the continued operation of the Indian Point nuclear power plant, which is shutting down in the next few years.
