GOSHEN – As many as 800 residential customers combined in the Orange
and Rockland and Central Hudson utilities territory may be eligible to
participate in a new community solar energy project that will provide
a local source of clean energy and protect the environment.
Sustainable Hudson Valley is working with Nexamp of Boston to develop solar farms in Wappinger and Wawayanda and offer residential customers of those utilities, as well as NYSEG in the Southern Tier, to buy solar credits and in the process, save 10 percent on their utility bills.
Project Manager Eric Misbach said there will be benefits to participate in the program on a number of levels.
“By signing up for a community solar program, you are directly contributing to the growth in renewable energy in New York State – there is a goal of 50 percent renewable energy by 2030 – so the only way to get there is to put as much solar energy on the grid as possible,” Misbach said. “We are able to put these solar projects only because we are provided an additional incentive by the state (NYSERDA) and by the utility when we share it with local residents.”
Utility customers may sign up for the program now through www.solarize-HudsonValley.org.
It is expected the program will launch next spring once the solar farms
are up and running.
While Nexamp is concentrating on developing solar projects in New York, the company also has facilities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rode Island.
