People gathered at the Kent School Saturday with lots of donated merchandise
KENT – Generosity abounded in Kent Saturday when tons of merchandise headed to hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico was loaded on three school buses.
‘Stuff the School Bus’ was the idea of Kent resident Pam Richardson who worked in conjunction with the Carmel School District, the Carmel-Kent Chamber of Commerce, Carmel Rotary Club, Putnam Hospital Center, Henry Boyd Well Drilling and several local merchants.
“I believed we could easily fill one bus with donations of batteries, flashlights, portable lanterns, diapers, baby wipes, cases of water and feminine hygiene products,” Richardson said. “As the day wore on, more and more donations were brought to the Kent School parking lot. One bus wouldn’t handle the volume and the school district told us, ‘Whatever you need!’ We filled that first bus, a second bus and yes, even a third. People in our community are so generous.”
The vehicles were driven to the Yonkers Armory in Westchester which has been created as a point of collection by the state.
Items donated in Putnam will be shipped this week to the hurricane ravaged U.S. possession.
Richardson said “so many people in our area were affected by the affects of Hurricane Maria with friends, family and other loved ones losing everything. We all chipped in to help which made all of those who donated feel so special.”
