Man arrested in connection with latest Newburgh murder

NEWBURGH – A man who was staying with a relative in Newburgh has
been charged with murder in connection with the death of a Newburgh woman
on Sunday.

Newburgh City Police were called to 88 Carson Avenue at 2:40 p.m. on Sunday
for an unattended death.

Tanya Smith, 47, was found dead in a second-floor bedroom. Police did
not reveal how she died.

City detectives along with the Orange County District Attorney’s
Office investigated and arrested 59-year-old Kevin Cook.

He was charged with murder and as being a fugitive from justice stemming
from an open warrant dated August from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Cook was being held on the murder charge.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact
