COBLESKILL – As Congress continues to discuss provisions for the 2018 agriculture bill, the House Agriculture Committee came to SUNY Cobleskill on Monday to hear concerns of New York farmers.
Congressman John Faso (R, NY-19), a member of the Ag Committee, noted dairy farmers are concerned about federal insurance to cover the lower selling prices of their milk compared to what it costs to produce it.
“They want to see the federal government act with a better insurance program to sustain them when their costs of production greatly exceed the market price they receive,” the congressman said. “So today, the cost of production is about 20 percent more than the price they receive in their milk check every month. It is a very dire situation for many dairy farms, particularly for the small dairy farms.”
Faso already introduced legislation to insure the accuracy of labeling on organic products.
