BREWSTER – Despite heat and humidity Sunday with the mercury topping 90 degrees, large crowds jammed Brewster’s main thoroughfare for the community’s 26th annual Founder’s Day celebration.  Police estimated more than 5,000 attended the event.
Attendees enjoyed each other’s company by browsing through 126 exhibits featuring everything from Central and South American food delicacies to Pennsylvania Dutch pretzels, locally harvested honey, regionally produced jams and jellies, intricate arts and crafts, live entertainment and community services agencies displaying their wares.

Lots of food, including a seasonl favorite,
grilled fresh corn

And, lots of music

Mayor Jim Schoenig was appreciative of the effort put into the day’s event. “What a success story. We are so grateful to our organizers for this wonderful event.”
The Coalition for a Better Brewster organized the street fair. Co-Chairwoman Laurie Manning was thrilled with the results. “Brewster is back because our little village is all about people.”
Manning, a 30-year resident of the village and 20-year Main Street businesswoman, said that is “what I want for my community. Thanks everyone for participating!”
There was a sign of the times at the fair with a large dump truck positioned to block traffic at each intersection with Main Street.
Brewster Village Police Chief John DelGado explained the phenomenon. “Turn on the television and all you hear is news about terrorists mowing down innocent people at community get-togethers. I would never anticipate such an occurrence in Brewster but I decided to take no chances.”
