Man who shot his girlfriend gets jail, probation after victim asks for leniency

KINGSTON – A Newburgh man, who was indicted by an Ulster County grand jury for recklessly shooting a female friend in the face on February 26 at was sentenced on Thursday to five years probation with six months in jail.
Darren Olympia had pled guilty to felony assault in the case.
Following a night of drinking in a Newburgh bar, Olympia, who had recently been certified and licensed for a handgun as an armed guard, for no justifiable reason, pulled his loaded pistol at 32 Bingham Road in the Town of Malborough. A short time later he unintentionally caused the weapon to fire with a bullet striking the victim in the forehead.
The woman suffered extensive injuries to her forehead and face and has undergone several surgeries and reconstructive procedures.
In Ulster County Court on Thursday, consistent with the victim’s
plea for leniency and the district attorney’s recommendation, Olympia
was sentenced to six months in jail and five years of probation.
