WASHINGTON – Future attempts
to fund commercial anchorages between Yonkers and Kingston on the Hudson
River are not going to happen – at least for a year – as the
House of Representatives has included Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney’s
(D, NY-18) amendment in a Coast Guard appropriations bill.
Maloney had the first attempt to place those 10 new anchorages placed
on the river killed several months ago.
“Just in case anyone gets any bright ideas, this is one more way
to make sure that stupid proposal stays dead and buried,” Maloney
said.
The Coast Guard is about to embark on a study of the impact of other potential
uses along the river.
“This action barring expenditure for new anchorages will help safeguard
the Hudson from potentially devastating risk to the environment and economy
of the region,” said Scenic Hudson President Ned Sullivan.
If passed into law, the amendment would make it impossible for the agency
to establish any anchorage sites in the specified area prior to October
1, 2018.
