PORT JERVIS – A 100-car parking garage in downtown Port Jervis could be in the city’s future.
The common council gave the green light for Mayor Kelly Decker to issue a request for proposals for engineering firms to come up with plans.
The mayor said the $2.5 million cost could be paid off in 20 years with
50 percent occupancy at $5 for an entire day of parking.
“Obviously you are going to get more than that especially when you have weddings and receptions that gone on in the event places,” the mayor said. “Under construction right now we have apartments going in. So parking is going to be vital as it is already downtown and very restrictive. It will be even more so without a parking garage.”
Decker envisions the building fitting in with the architecture of downtown with brick face. It would be well lit, with security cameras and a police substation.
If it comes to fruition, the three-story structure would be built between the Promenade, which is under construction, and Ball Street.
