MONTICELLO – The US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Main Street program is providing $500,000 in funding to assist in the rehabilitation of a long-vacant building in downtown Monticello.
The funds will help restore the three-story brick Strong Building at 430 Broadway. The structure, which has been empty for 10 years, has extensive interior water damage. Once rehabbed, the building will be reconfigured into 16 affordable housing units.
Mayor Douglas Solomon said the project “provides much needed care to our village’s historic infrastructure, while also paving the way for Monticello’s bright future.”
“Main Street is the heart and soul of so many communities across our nation,” said HUD Secretary Ben Carson. “HUD is proud to support this public-private venture and breathe new life into a building that may have otherwise become forgotten history.”
“Repurposing historic assets like Monticello’s Strong Building into affordable housing can anchor neighborhood revitalization,” said Lynn Patton, HUD regional administrator.
