Additional funding approved for Sullivan County Jail construction

TOWN OF THOMPSON – Foundation work as the new Sullivan County Jail will cost another $300,000.
As contractor Pike Company drilled into the rock, they learned the ground was not as stable as they thought, so the Public Works Committee of the county legislature on Thursday had to appropriate the funding for additional work, said Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez.
“Once they started digging they found out the rock they were hitting was not rock solid enough to hold the building, so they had to dig a little bit deeper so they could put a more solid foundation,” Alvarez said.
The additional cost will come from the project’s contingency fund.
