Little change in Hudson Valley unemployment

ALBANY – The May unemployment
rate in the Hudson Valley is 4.1 percent, unchanged from April and up
from 3.9 percent in May 2016. The state labor department also said there
were 45,900 people unemployed in the region, down from 46,100 in April
and up from 43,900 in May 2016.
In May, Columbia County had the lowest rate of joblessness in the state, at 3.4 percent.
Putnam County, ranked fourth in the state, had an unemployment rate of 3.8 percent. Rockland followed at number nine with 3.9 percent unemployment.
Dutchess County, at number 13, was at 4.0 percent. Westchester, at number 17, had a 4.1 percent rate.
Orange and Ulster counties, tied at number 18, were at 4.2 percent and Sullivan County, at number 24, had a rate of 4.3 percent.
Greene County, with 4.7 percent unemployment in May, was ranked 36th in the state.
From May 2016 to May 2017, the state’s private sector job count increased by 138,100. In May 2017, the number of private sector jobs in the state was 8,063,200.
New York’s private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers, which is conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 4.3 percent to 4.4 percent in May 2017.
