NEW CITY – A Spring Valley man faces up to 25 years in state prison following his conviction of attempted murder. Jonathan McNeil, 23, fired several shots from a car at his former girlfriend, who was standing outside her Hillcrest home with her mother after being dropped off by a male friend.
The victim was struck in the leg and several rounds struck the driver side of the vehicle in which the male friend was sitting during the July 20, 2016 incident that took place around 12:30 a.m.
The shooting occurred after McNeil initially approached the car occupied by the victim and her friend and smashed the rear window with a baseball bat. The male victim backed out of the driveway and drove off. He returned later and that is when McNeil drove by with another individual and began firing.
Ramapo Town Police investigated and arrested McNeil two days later.
He was convicted of attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.
“The crimes of which the defendant has been convicted were cold, calculated and violent and resulted in an innocent woman being seriously wounded,” said District Attorney Thomas Zugibe. “I hope the victim and all of those involved in the shooting will find some degree of solace in the conviction and in the knowledge that the defendant will spend many years in prison.”
