MONTICELLO – Sullivan County
government has issued a request for proposals soliciting firms to conduct
a baseline analysis of the current air and water quality and noise environment
in and around the area where the Millennium Pipeline company wants to
build a natural gas compressor station in the Town of Highland.
Past efforts by the county to solicit bids for such a study did not pan out, so a new RFP was issued on Friday.
Millennium is currently seeking federal approvals to construct the 22,400-horsepower facility off Route 55 north of Eldred. It would not be far from the Eldred School District’s main campus.
County Legislator Nadia Rajsz, who chairs the Health and Family Services
Committee and represents a portion of the Town of Highlands, said the
county wants to protect the health and safety of its residents.
“We do have concern that in the future there may be emissions,” Rajsz said. “We don’t know for sure; we don’t have any hard data or proof, but if in the future there are issues with health of the residents, then we can go back to the baseline and actually asset it to whatever future status there may be.”
Scott Samuelson, who also represents a portion of Highland, said it is “imperative” to establish baseline data around the proposed site.
