PORT JERVIS – Orange and Rockland Utilities has scheduled June 12 to begin installation of a new natural gas main along Pike Street in Port Jervis.
The project, which will cost some $830,000, is part of a large-scale investment in Port Jervis by O&R to eliminate all of its low pressure gas main in the city.
The Pike Street project is designed to help improve service in the neighborhood by replacing 3,300 feet of cast-iron main in O&R’s low-pressure natural gas distribution system. The company said those mains and about 50 gas services to buildings will be removed and a new high-pressure system, which uses modern high-density, plastic mains, will be installed.
Those new plastic mains are more resistant to leak-causing corrosion than cast-iron mains and also provide more flexibility to enhance service reliability and safe gas distribution system operation, officials said.
Contractor Titanic will be replacing the gas main on Pike Street from Front to Canal Street between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for about 12 weeks.
Affected customers have been notified of the project by letter from O&R.
