GOSHEN – The Rules Committee of the Orange County Legislature, on Wednesday, set July 19 and 20 for two public hearings on whether to allow creation of a new Town of North Monroe.
The new municipality would be formed by splitting a portion of the current
Town of Monroe and essentially allowing the Village of Kiryas Joel to
expand within the new boundaries.  Petitioners have sought permission
to create the new town, which requires county legislative approval and
a vote by Monroe residents.
Rules Committee Chairwoman Katie Bonelli said the committee also decided to have county Planning Commissioner David Church conduct an environmental review of the proposal.
“All we are doing is allowing the Monroe voters to vote on it,” Bonelli said after the meeting. She said voters will be presented with all the information and facts about establishing a new town.
There is a time requirement for the process. If it is not placed on the fall ballot this year, the proposal would have to wait another two years.
