ALBANY – Putnam County, with a 3.9 percent rate of joblessness in March, had the lowest rate in the Hudson Valley/Catskill region, the state labor department reported Tuesday. The rate declined by 0.1 percent from the same month last year.
Labor Department analyst John Nelson expects joblessness to remain low going forward.
“Certainly we have a lot of big projects that are at various stages of development in the region that should further contribute to the job numbers that we are seeing here in the region,” Nelson said.
Columbia County and Rockland County, each with 4.0 percent unemployment, were ranked second in the region. Joblessness fell in both counties by 0.1 percent when compared to March 2016.
Ranked third was Westchester County with 4.1 percent unemployment, down from 4.3 percent one year earlier.
Orange County was ranked fourth with 4.2 percent unemployment, down from 4.3 percent.
Ulster County, with 4.4 percent joblessness, was ranked fifth. One year earlier, the county was at 4.5 percent.
