NEWBURGH – Installation of the sensors that will detect gunfire in Newburgh should be installed by June 9, the director of operations for the ShotSpotter company told the city council.
The system will be able to instantaneously detect where gunfire has occurred on Newburgh streets to aid police in their investigatory response time.
Once the system has been installed, ShotSpotter’s Anthony Nunley said it will be tested.
“Once we have the system in place, we will chose a number of locations in the city – normally two to three locations – and go out with the police department and shoot off live rounds to base-line the system and to calibrate all of the sensors that are within the system,” Nunley said.
The company had hoped to have all of the sensors installed by May, but cutting through red tape with Central Hudson since some sensors will be on their utility poles, is taking longer than anticipated.
