NEW PALTZ – The projected $4 million deficit at SUNY New Paltz has been reduced by $1 million.
College Vice President for Administration and Finance Michele Halstead briefed the College Council on the financial picture saying the reduction came as a result of belt tightening and projected reductions in costs and spending.
“The only real swag in there is our supplies, travel, contracts and equipment – you can’t really predict that with a lot of certainty, but we do know that people got the message,” Halstead said. “They are already pealing back on conference, travel and they are looking at their supplies, so we have really seen a downturn in expenditures.”
The college also placed a 90-day freeze on filling vacant positions and cut back on adjunction professors to bring the deficit down to its current $3 million level.
