STEWART AIRPORT The Orange County Citizens Foundation has joined forces
with the Orange County Partnership and Sullivan County Partnership to
urge the state to move forward with planning to widen Route 17 from Harriman
to Monticello.
Citizens Foundation Executive Director Nancy Proyect briefed the Stewart Airport Commission on their proposal on Tuesday noting growth is occurring along that corridor with Amy’s Kitchen to be built in Goshen and the Montreign casino going up in Kiamesha Lake and the possibility of the Legoland theme park being constructed in Goshen.
“If we don’t have the transportation infrastructure to go along with the growth, then we are going to have all of these great organizations and tourist attractions and companies and not a way for people to get to them,” Proyect said.
A 2013 study called for the addition of a third lane in each direction,
Proyect noted, saying the coalition is urging the state to fund environmental
and initial engineering to move the project forward.
